Tauba Auerbach [2,3] pop up folio box set produced by Toppan Excel Hong Kong, published by Printed Matter and Auerbach in a limited edition of 1000.
Features six slim hardcover die cut pop-up volumes housed in a specially designed slipcase. Auerbach’s choice of the pop-up technique, most commonly used in children’s books, relates to her interest in perception, specifically how we, as creatures who operate in three dimensions, might have the capacity “to conceive of a dimension that’s beyond, or even coiled within, the space that we experience.” These books grew out of the artist’s experiments in painting, in which she employs optical effects like shadows, creases, and geometric patterns to create canvases that, though flat, suggest three-dimensional topographies. Here she explodes these planes by allowing the die-cut forms to transform from flattened, folded paper into carefully realized sculptures. Highlighting the animation of this transition from two to three dimensions, Auerbach titled the series [2,3], using the mathematical term for the interval between 2 and 3.
Although the edition was 1000, the book was unfortunately published shortly before Hurricane Sandy. The publisher's storage space was inundated with flood waters and the bulk of the edition was destroyed, making the few copies that were dispersed pre-Hurricane Sandy hard to locate.
Shows some age appropriate shelf wear with marks to case as pictured. One interior volume (the blue one) has minor corner stain as pictured with minor wear throughout to volumes. Yellow volume / gems opens 80% flat but upon further bending opens fully. Overall everything shows very well, missing interior insert. A scarce volume and pretty incredible. She's big / heavy and a very scarce find, considerably expensive elsewhere.
